TREATMENT
3 very important levels of treatment:
Onset of the disease and mild manifestations - no treatment
Supportive care for moderate and severe cases: several therapeutic regimens with or without IV fluids and/or oxygen therapy
Supportive care for severe cases and complications: several therapeutic regimens with or without IV fluids and/or oxygen therapy
There is no cure (no specific medication available yet for the virus) and also no vaccine, meaning that all we can do is fight signs and symtpoms.
As with several viral infection novel coronavirus cases vary from mild to severe.
For the majority of the mild cases, the symptoms will disappear on their own without medical intervention. Maintaining a healthy way of life, drinking water and liquids, eating properly and resting will be enough on most cases.
Supportive care is usually required for moderate or severe cases.
It may also be required for people with pre-existing medical conditions (cardiovascular diseases, kidney and liver diseases, chronic respiratory problems, diabetes, and other debilitating conditions).
There is no cure, no vaccine, and no specific medication for the virus.
Supportive care refers to all the medical actions performed to treat the symptoms and signs of the patient's organism, therefore controlling the infection:
-
antivirals,
-
antipyretics and anti-inflammatory drugs,
-
IV fluids to treat dehydration,
-
oxygen therapy,
and in severe cases ventilation to facilitate and assist breathing.
