Viana do Castelo is a Portuguese city, capital of the district with the same name, in the North region, and integrated in the sub-region of Alto Minho.
It is soothes of a municipality - with 319,02 km ² of area and 85 445 inhabitants (2011 ) - subdivided in 27 parishes. The county is bordered to the north by the municipality of Caminha, to the east by Ponte de Lima, to the south by Barcelos and Esposende, and to the west by the Atlantic Ocean
It belongs to the Cittaslow Cities network.
Until its elevation to the city on January 20, 1848, the current Viana do Castelo was simply called "Viana" (also referred to as "Viana da Foz do Lima" and "Viana do Minho", to differentiate it from Viana do Alentejo). In 1977, the seat of a Catholic diocese had been elevated.
Belongs to the Portuguese Network of Healthy Cities.
